сокр DoD, DOD, DDПравительственное ведомство, образованное в 1949 вместо существовавшего с 1789 Военного министерства [ War Department]. Ведает всеми оборонными вопросами, а с 1961 и вопросами гражданской обороны. Возглавляется министром обороны [ Secretary of Defense], назначаемым Президентом США "по совету и с согласия" [ advice and consent] Сената [ Senate, U.S.] и являющимся членом кабинета министров [ cabinet]. Основными подразделениями Министерства обороны являются Министерства Армии (сухопутных сил) [ Department of the Army], ВВС [ Department of the Air Force] и ВМФ [ Department of the Navy], каждое из которых возглавляется министром, не являющимся членом кабинета министров и подчиненным министру обороны. В строго регламентированном процессе преемственности президентского поста [ Presidential succession] министр обороны США является третьим по важности советником Президента и третьим по порядку преемственности членом кабинета (после государственного секретаря и министра финансов).
